Sorry that did not work forme. When my PC (XP SP2) was joined to the domain
(W2K3 Server + SP1) the BITS service would not start. Also I could not do any
windows updates - always failed with 80246008 error. I took the PC off the
domain and the windows update worked agained and the BITS service started
fine. I looked on our DC and discovered the 'Default Domain policy' had
entries for 'Manual' start of BITS server and also permissions. My first test
was to disable this part of the policy. I re-join my PC back to the domain
and the BITS service once agained worked along with Windows Update. Now I
need to work what exactly caused the BITS service to stop working when
controlled by Group Policy. Any feedback is appreciated.

I have the impression that everybody is talking abour XP. In my OEM (paid)
Dutch VISTA there is in Services.msc no such thing like BITS, nor is there a
service with a in dutch translated version of BITS. I followed all advises I
could find: no one helps. Yes, in the registry BITS is present.
Furthermore I see no way to write a message to the community: ik I click
"question" in New, I hear a dry click, buth nothing happens.
Can anybody help me, please. Reply to ***@hetnet.nl.
Thanks

BITS is short for "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" which you will
find when viewing Services in your Vista system. No idea how that
translates into Dutch.

To try to avoid the language difficulties you could try switching to a
cmd window and enter this command:

sc GetDisplayName bits

Hint: I think it is less likely that the subcommand will be translated too
but in case it is just use

sc ?

to figure out what how to display BITS "display name" in your version
of Windows.

Furthermore I see no way to write a message to the community: ik I click
"question" in New, I hear a dry click, buth nothing happens.
That is usually a symptom of a misconfigured popup blocker.
Either disable all your popup blockers or make sure they allow
the host server name you are using to post with.

BTW you could also post using your spiffy new newsreader app
known (in English) as Windows Mail (e.g. Vista successor to OE).
There isn't a Dutch version of WU but posting this question in
a Vista specific newsgroup might be a better idea anyway.

If WM works the same way that OE does you should be able to
open that other newsgroup by copying the following URL and entering
it in your Address bar (or Run... input box).

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.nl.windows.vista

Note: before posting you would probably want to personalize the account
that might create.

Cross-post added for convenience. If you want to open that newsgroup
with the web interface that you are currently using and the portal you are
using references it you can just click on the new link in this message's header.

Good luck
